What Is Unconditional Love? Does It Really Exist?

Love is a very popular term and often one of the most abused words in the dictionary. It is known by all men. Even a child knows this word however, only a few know the true meaning of it. Some people define it as a deep tender and passionate affection. Others describe love as a strong affinity towards another person, animal or thing.

Apparently, love is vague and complex to define. You can browse hundreds of dictionaries, famous psychology books and authors however they all fail to define the true meaning and essence of it. To know the true meaning of if, we should refer to the author of love - GOD. In fact, God is love.

God does not simply love but He is love. It is because love is His nature and the expression of His being. Everything God does, flow from His love. It is not a foolish and sentimental love that most people know.

The bible describes love in the book of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 as "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails"

With this description of love, you will know that it is not just a feeling or a matter of great affection, desire and preference. Most people have a misconception of being and staying in love. Generally, people only focus on the goodness of the person they love. Certainly, it is easy to love people who are your own flesh and blood or your friend who stayed with you through thick and thin. But what if you cannot find any goodness on him or her? What if you are not blood related and he or she is your enemy? Are you still willing to do the things mentioned in the bible?

Unconditional means absolute or not limited by conditions. Willingness to love and to do the things described in the bible regardless of who the person is and what he or she does is called unconditional love. This kind of love was first demonstrated by God to us by sending His son to save us from eternal death and for us to be called His children. And He did this while we were all sinners and undeserving of the precious gift of eternal life. God loved us even if we are disloyal and rebellious. Our nature does not know how to love others even ourselves. But because God showed His love through His son Jesus, we now have a clear picture of it and not just love but unconditional love.

You may be wondering if it is possible for you to love unconditionally just like God because you are only human. Amazingly, God has given those people who receive His son Jesus as their Savior not only eternal life with Him but also the ability to love unconditionally as He does. This is through the power of the Holy Spirit that dwells on them.

Knowing God's love gives wholeness to your life. Only His love satisfies thus allows you to enjoy and have a significant life. Allow God to show and experience His love through believing in His son Jesus Christ and giving your life to Him. Then the love in your life will overflow and empowers you to love others unconditionally through the Holy Spirit.
